Enough, children

“You hit me!”
“You hit me first”
“I was defending myself”
“No, I was defending myself. You have no right to hit me. I will tell mummy about you!”
“I have every right to defend myself!”
“Well then so do I… take this!”

BANG! POW! BOOM!

Well this sure describes the way the world is seeing these two punch it out.
We ask one another why Lebanon lets Hezbollah bring death and destruction to their country. Why not ask them
to leave and end the death of their people.
We only know what we see on the television so we are sure we’re not getting the whole story.

The Lebanese government in its present form is no match to Hezbollah; they are simply unable to stop them. How and why Hezbollah grew to such strength in the first place is another topic, but I would like to draw your attention to the following:

Even if the Lebanese government had the upper hand, it would still be impossible to ask Hezbollah to ‘leave’. This is akin to America asking its African Americans or Mexicans to ‘leave’ because of problems they may be causing in America.

Hezbollah are Lebanese and represented in the Lebanese government by democratically elected members of parliament.

Unfortunately there is no quick fix to this problem; it is far too complex and deep rooted to be tackled with the present bias and extreme mentalities. As atrocious as the war has been so far, it will serve to bring all the muck that needs to be dealt with by all sides to the surface. Only when this situation is addressed honestly and fairly will we be able to move forward and towards peace. The West has to understand that extreme and biased opinions will only breed further extremes. I have yet to hear a single Israeli ask “Why do the Arabs hate us? What can we do to live in peace with our neighbours?”

There’s no smoke without fire…
